The Hocus Pocus cast begins with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the unforgettable Sanderson sisters. The 1993 film also stars Omri Katz as Max Dennison, Thora Birch as Dani Dennison and Vinessa Shaw as Allison Watts. Disney brought the three witches back for Hocus Pocus 2, while a younger Salem group took over the present-day adventure. For readers comparing another supernatural ensemble, the Coven Academy cast guide offers a useful point of reference.
Who is in the original Hocus Pocus cast?
Hocus Pocus follows Max Dennison after his family moves from Los Angeles to Salem, Massachusetts. Max lights the Black Flame Candle on Halloween and revives Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson. The film works because the witches get the loudest jokes, while Max, Dani and Allison give the story its human center.

The Sanderson sisters
Bette Midler plays Winifred, the sharp-tongued eldest sister who drives the witches' plan. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Sarah, whose carefree manner and singing voice make her instantly recognisable. Kathy Najimy plays Mary, the sister with a comic, practical streak and a famous sense of smell. Their timing as a trio carries the film through its wildest scenes. Max, Dani and Allison
Omri Katz plays Max as a teenager who starts the night unimpressed by Salem's Halloween traditions. Thora Birch gives Dani the story's heart, with her fearless affection for her brother and her love of Halloween. Vinessa Shaw plays Allison, Max's classmate and a Salem local who understands the Sanderson legend. Their costumes still influence Halloween costume shopping ideas, while classic seasonal plans often include a nearby pumpkin patch.
Who plays Billy Butcherson and Thackery Binx?
Doug Jones plays Billy Butcherson, Winifred's long-dead former lover, who becomes an unlikely ally. Jones returned as Billy in Hocus Pocus 2. Thackery Binx has a more unusual credit story. Sean Murray appears as the teenage Thackery in the 1693 sequence, while Jason Marsden provides Binx's speaking voice after the character becomes an immortal black cat. That cat connection is part of why the film fits so easily beside seasonal searches such as the black cat Starbucks Halloween drink and Halloween background ideas.
The original supporting cast includes Tobias Jelinek as Jay and Larry Bagby as Ernie, better known as Ice, the two bullies who cross paths with Max. Penny Marshall and Garry Marshall also appear in the adult Halloween-party storyline. Those smaller roles help Salem feel like a town celebrating one very strange night, rather than a set built only for the witches.
Which actors returned for Hocus Pocus 2?
Hocus Pocus 2 reunited Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as Winifred, Sarah and Mary. Doug Jones also returned as Billy Butcherson. The sequel arrived nearly three decades after the original and keeps its focus on the Sanderson sisters. Omri Katz, Thora Birch and Vinessa Shaw did not reprise Max, Dani and Allison in the film.
That split explains a frequent search question. The sequel is connected to the first movie, but it does not follow the Dennison siblings as adults. For a different family-friendly cast comparison, readers can check the Hotel Transylvania cast or the Toy Story 5 cast.
Who are the new Hocus Pocus 2 characters?
Whitney Peak plays Becca, a teenager whose birthday brings the Sanderson sisters back to Salem. Belissa Escobedo plays Becca's loyal friend Izzy, and Lilia Buckingham plays Cassie, a former friend trying to repair a fractured relationship. The three actors form the sequel's central friendship group.
Sam Richardson plays Gilbert, a devoted fan of the original Sanderson legend. Hannah Waddingham appears as the Mother Witch, and Tony Hale plays Salem mayor Jefry Traske. The new cast lets the sequel revisit familiar places without copying Max, Dani and Allison beat for beat. Toughestblogger treats that distinction seriously because a cast search often means readers want both the actor names and the character map.
Why does the Hocus Pocus cast remain so memorable?
The three leads made very different comic choices. Midler gives Winifred an imperious theatrical style, Parker makes Sarah gleefully odd, and Najimy grounds Mary's physical comedy. The younger actors react to that mayhem with enough sincerity to keep the fantasy accessible. It is the same balance viewers often seek in cast guides for the Horton Hears a Who cast, the He-Man 2026 cast and the Jessie cast.
The film's spells are fictional, of course. Viewers who want real-world spiritual material should treat it separately from Salem comedy, including a Spellsology guide for modern witchcraft rituals and spellwork or a Soul Manifestation program for spiritual self-reflection. For pure seasonal fun, the cast is more than enough reason to rewatch the film, quote the sisters and share a few Halloween memes.
